Want to Start a Business but Something Keeps Stopping You? It’s Probably Not What You Think

Fear of Starting a Business? How to Move Past It

If a fear of starting a business is the only thing standing between you and your idea, you are not alone, and it is almost never about the business plan. You’ve got the idea. You might even have the name, and let’s be honest, you’ve already checked if the domain is free. You’ve watched other people launch with half your skill and thought, I could do that. And yet, here you are. Still not doing it.

I want to tell you something that might sting a little and free you a lot: the thing stopping you is almost never the business plan. It’s the mindset.

What’s Really Behind Your Fear of Starting a Business

Ask someone why they haven’t launched yet and they’ll usually say money, time, the market, or that they’re “waiting for the right moment”. Sometimes that’s true. However, dig one layer down, which is exactly what coaching does, and you’ll find the real blocks underneath.

“Who am I to do this?” Imposter syndrome, right on schedule. Never mind your experience, your skills, or your qualifications, some voice insists you’re about to be found out.

Fear of failure. Not just the business failing, but you failing. Publicly. Where people can see.

Fear of success. This is the sneaky one. What if it works and life changes? What if people judge you for charging, for being visible, or for wanting more?

Waiting to feel ready. Here’s the truth: nobody feels ready. Readiness isn’t a feeling that arrives before you start. Confidence comes from action, not before it.

Old money and worth stories. People like us don’t run businesses. It’s greedy to charge for that. I have to over-deliver to deserve payment. Sound familiar? These beliefs were installed long before your business idea ever showed up.

Why “Just Push Through” Doesn’t Work

The standard advice is to hustle harder, feel the fear and do it anyway, or fake it till you make it. Action matters enormously, of course. But if you push into action on top of unexamined beliefs, you get a business run on fear: undercharging, overworking, hiding from visibility, procrastinating on the scary stuff, and burning out before you’ve properly begun.

I see this constantly, and not just in brand-new founders. The mindset you launch with becomes the mindset you run the business with, which is exactly why doing this work now, before or during launch, pays off for years.

How to Work Through Fear of Starting a Business

Once you can name a block, you can start to move it. These five steps are where I ask my clients to begin.

  • Catch the belief in the wild. Next time you procrastinate on something business-related, pause and ask yourself what you’re telling yourself right now. Write down the exact sentence. That’s your block, in its own words.
  • Ask whose voice that really is. Most limiting beliefs aren’t ours. They’re inherited from family, school, or old bosses. Once you see a belief as something you learned, you realise it’s something you can unlearn.
  • Shrink the first step. “Launch a business” is terrifying, but “tell one person my idea” is doable. Because momentum is built rather than summoned, it helps to know the practical basics early too, such as how setting up as a sole trader compares with a limited company, so the admin feels manageable rather than mysterious.
  • Let it be imperfect. Your first offer, first post, first price. Every business you admire started as someone’s messy first go.
  • Borrow belief while you build your own. This is honestly half of what a coach does: hold the certainty that you can, until you can hold it yourself.

Where Coaching Comes In

This is some of my favourite work, because watching someone go from “who am I to do this?” to actually doing it, taking bookings, getting paid, and standing tall in their thing, never gets old.

As an accredited life coach with a corporate background in HR and leadership, and as a business owner myself, I know both sides: the practical realities of building something, and the inner work that makes it possible. You can see how this works in practice on my life coaching and mentoring services page. In our sessions, we uncover the specific beliefs holding you back, rebuild your confidence from the ground up, and get you taking real steps at your own pace, but moving.

Your idea deserves better than living in your head. Book a free consultation call and let’s talk about what’s really stopping you, and how to move past it.
