You’ve got the idea. You might even have the name (and let’s be honest, you’ve checked if the domain is free).
You’ve watched other people launch some of them with half your skill and thought I could do that.
And yet. Here you are. Still not doing it.
If you’re afraid to start your own business, I want to tell you something that might sting a little and free you a lot: the thing stopping you is almost never the business plan. It’s the mindset.
The real blocks (they’re rarely about money or time)
Ask someone why they haven’t launched yet and they’ll say money, time, the market, “waiting for the right moment”. Sometimes that’s true. But dig one layer down and this is exactly what coaching does and you find the real blocks:
“Who am I to do this?” Imposter syndrome, right on schedule. Never mind your experience, your skills, your qualifications some voice insists you’re about to be found out.
Fear of failure. Not just the business failing you failing. Publicly. Where people can see.
Fear of success. The sneaky one. What if it works and life changes? What if people judge you for charging? For being visible? For wanting more?
Waiting to feel ready. Here’s the freakin’ truth: nobody feels ready. Readiness isn’t a feeling that arrives before you start. Confidence comes from action, not before it.
Old money and worth stories. People like us don’t run businesses. It’s greedy to charge for that. I have to over-deliver to deserve payment. Sound familiar? These beliefs were installed long before your business idea showed up.
Why “just push through” doesn’t work
The standard advice is hustle harder, feel the fear and do it anyway, fake it till you make it.
And look action matters enormously. But if you push into action on top of unexamined beliefs, you get a business run on fear: undercharging, overworking, hiding from visibility, procrastinating on the scary stuff, and burning out before you’ve properly begun.
I see it constantly, and not just in brand-new founders. The mindset you launch with becomes the mindset you run the business with. Which is exactly why doing this work now before or during launch pays off for years.
How to work through mindset blocks when starting a business
Catch the belief in the wild. Next time you procrastinate on something business-related, pause and ask: what am I telling myself right now? Write down the exact sentence. That’s your block, in its own words.
Ask: whose voice is that? Most limiting beliefs aren’t ours. They’re inherited from family, school, old bosses. Once you see a belief as something you learned, you realise it’s something you can unlearn.
Shrink the first step. “Launch a business” is terrifying. “Tell one person my idea” is doable. Action, action, action, but incremental. Momentum is built, not summoned.
Let it be imperfect. Your first offer, first post, first price. Every business you admire started as someone’s messy first go.
Borrow belief while you build your own. This is honestly half of what a coach does: hold the certainty that you can, until you can hold it yourself.
Where coaching comes in
This is some of my favourite work. Because watching someone go from “who am I to do this?” to actually doing it taking bookings, getting paid, standing tall in their thing never, ever gets old.
As an accredited life coach with a corporate background in HR and leadership, and as a business owner myself, I know both sides: the practical realities of building something, and the inner work that makes it possible. In our sessions we uncover the specific beliefs holding you back, rebuild your confidence from the ground up, and get you taking real steps at your pace, but moving.
Your idea deserves better than living in your head.
