What is mentoring and how do you know if you need a personal mentor

If you are like me and had no idea what a coach is versus a mentor, you’re not alone. As a coach and mentor, I thought it would be a good idea to explain a few of the differences. This may help you decide if coaching or mentoring is best for you.

What is a Mentor?

  • A mentor is someone who provides guidance, support, and wisdom based on their life experience.
  • They help you navigate challenges, set goals, and grow both personally and professionally.
  • Unlike a coach, who may focus on specific skills or results, a mentor often builds a deeper, long-term relationship based on shared experiences.

What a Mentor Does:

  • Offers advice based on their own life and professional experiences.
  • Listens actively and empathetically to help you work through obstacles and tough decisions.
  • Provides a safe space to explore your ideas, fears, and goals without judgment.
  • Helps you recognize your strengths and areas for growth.
  • Shares knowledge, resources, and tools that may be helpful in your journey.
  • Holds you accountable for progress and helps you stay on track with your goals.

How Mentorship Benefits You:

  • Provides clarity and perspective when you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
  • Encourages personal development and self-awareness.
  • Offers a sounding board for your ideas and decisions, helping you avoid mistakes.
  • Builds confidence and resilience in the face of challenges.
  • Strengthens your sense of purpose and direction, especially when navigating difficult life transitions (like grief or loss).

Why You Might Need a Mentor:

  • When you’re feeling lost or uncertain about the next steps in life or career.
  • If you’re looking for someone who has been through similar struggles and can provide guidance.
  • To help you reflect on your life, gain clarity, and make empowered decisions.

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Keep your eyes open for the “What is mentoring” blog where I will break down what a mentor does and why you may choose to hire a mentor instead of a coach.

What is Coaching?

Structured and Short-Term: Coaching relationships are often more structured and goal-focused, typically lasting for a set period (e.g. 6, 8, or 10 sessions).

Professional, Equal Partnership: Coaches and clients work together as equal partners. The coach provides guidance, but the client takes the lead in their own development.

What is Mentoring?

Long-Term, Developmental Relationship: Mentoring relationships often span a longer period and may evolve more organically. The mentor offers ongoing support as the mentee grows. Typically lasting 6 months to 1 year.

Guidance from Experience: The mentor usually has more experience and shares insights, advice, and wisdom from their own career or life journey.

I would love for you to share this with someone who would benefit.
